53. Mini Coilgun

This project will demonstrate electromagnetism, as well as having 2 main functions, accelerating a metal object inside the barrel, and acting like a taser. Since this relies on 330 volts DC, extra precautions are needed, though the shocks are more annoying than dangerous.

<Camera capacitors>

To generate the high voltages to charge up the capacitors, a circuit from a disposable camera will be sufficient enough to charge them up. These circuits are simplistic, being that the small transformer is used to boost up the voltage.

<HV testing>

Any disposable camera will be fine, as long they have a flash in the camera-the bulb can only be powered by high voltage in a quick time. Once you got the circuit out from the Camera itself, make sure to discharge the capacitor, so that you won't shock yourself, and it can be done by shorting out the 2 HV capacitor leads. The coil for the coilgun will consist of 20-34 AWG wire wrapped to the barrel, such as a hollow shell of a pen. for the trigger, a push button will be used, as well as for the HV charging. The unit will also be powered through a Li-ion battery, with the Buck converter bringing the voltage of 3.7V to 1.5V.

<Body>

In the tests, the results were very underwhelming, being that the projectile doesn't travel far, even with 6 capacitors connected in parallel. But there could be room for improvement/experimentation, you will be able to shoot the projectile at the desired distance!
